Republic Day, 2013

I felt really honoured and  proud to be asked to hoist our National Flag this Republic day at the local school. Beleive me, you get goose pimples. The school also tried out a march past this year and I had to take the salute. Great moment:-) The kids singing Thaayin mani kodi paari took me back to school - its been so many years. I did prepare a brief message this year with the help of Google translate. The jist was Cleanliness and it seemed to go down well- with the adults at least  who all echoed it when they spoke .
That is our dopey Councillor and her husband ( ex-councillor; they keep it in the family) helping with the flag hoisting but for this I decided I wouldn't be reticent and managed to do the major bits.

The kids were familiar too because we are doing a Spoken English program at our library with 30 kids from the school. They are transported by a Maruti van to the library every evening for a one - hour class. The parents are supposed to be paying Rs.500 every month but so far most have been dribbling in about Rs.100 or 200.The shortfall will hopefully be met by people from this blog.Already two people have volunteered to chip in and thank you and God bless you both.

Oh yes, I chipped in with some sports equipment for the school and a large plastic drum to hold drinking water. Babu and Ravi have both contributed in different years with sweaters and other stuff for the school. Time your next trip for Independence day, people and you can do the honours.

as u say a burst of patriotism hits me whenever the flag is unfurled.
but nowadays, at all our functions the national anthem is played on the cd ,.at a recent conference, the cd dint play and there was dead silence for 5 mts. the organisers dint step up t the mike to say lets sing. at last one brave soul stepped up to the mike and began well but he skipped two lines of the anthem, which i felt was a shame. nowadays we dont even know our anthem correctly, and are ashamed to sing it loudly.
